Instructions for Formal Admission to the

 School of Education at Holy Family University

 

Formal admission to the School of Education is the completion of the application process that confirms your intent and qualifications to pursue certification as a teacher in the State of Pennsylvania.  In order to qualify for formal admission to the School of Education at Holy Family University you must meet the following requirements.

 

If you are admitted to the School of Education after September 1, 2003 you must:

·         Have earned a minimum of 48 credits at the undergraduate level

·         Be in a program leading to teacher certification

·         Have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 for all courses on your transcripts for undergrads; GPA of 3.0 for graduate students.  State certification requires 3.0 GPA upon graduation.

·         Receive the recommendation of two faculty members (undergraduate students)

·         Achieved passing scores, as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, on the Praxis I, PPST tests in Reading (10710 or 5710), Writing (20720 or 5720), and Mathematics (10730 or 5730)

·         Earned 3 credits in college-level English composition (C or better)

·         Earned 3 credits in college-level American or English literature (C or better)

·         Earned 6 credits in college-level mathematics (C or better)

·         Have completed all required undergraduate coursework

·         Have completed all required graduate coursework

·         Have met all additional program specific requirements if applicable

 

* Undergrad students: You should begin taking the Praxis I series as early as the second semester of your freshman year.  The tests must be completed and passed, along with the requirements listed above,  before you can be formally admitted to the School of Education and permitted to take junior/senior level courses.  Praxis tests are valid for ten years.

 

*Graduate students:  You must take and pass the Praxis I series within the first 12 credit hours after admission to the Graduate School, along with the requirements listed above, before you can be formally admitted to the School of Education.

Students whose primary language is not English may be eligible for additional testing time for the Praxis Tests.  Forms are available at www.ets.org/praxis  under Praxis I, Download Library (see Bulletins & Forms).  Documentation certification forms can be verified and signed at Holy Family University by Dr. Roger Gee in ETC room 435.

 

You should apply for formal admission as soon as you have met all the requirements.  Completed forms should be reviewed by your advisor and submitted to Mrs. Maria Rybicki, Compliance Specialist, Education & Technology Center, (ETC) Rm. 444.  After your application is reviewed, you will be notified in writing regarding your acceptance into the School of Education.
