In the United States, both tai chi and qi gong for health purposes are part of complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM.

Tai chi is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. A person doing tai chi moves his body slowly and gently, while breathing deeply and meditating.  is sometimes called "moving meditation".

Qi gong refers to a wide variety of traditional cultivation practices that involve methods of accumulating, circulation, and working with qi, breathing or energy within the body.
