I know that at one time or
another I have probably spoken to many of you about some of my
experiences with the Chinese art of Taijiquan (tai chi). Taiji
is becoming increasingly popular in the US and around the world
because of it's unique blend of self healing, exercise,
meditation and martial arts. I have found that it has made some
dramatic changes in my health and mental attitude and allows me
to be a great deal more relaxed under stressful conditions than
I otherwise might be.
Good teachers in this (as
in other areas) are hard to find, but I have been lucky enough
for the past few years to be able to study with a Chinese master
named Ru Yu Wen who began studying taiji over 40 years ago. Ru
has taught the chinese army as well as thousands of mainland
Chinese before coming to the US in 1995, where he taught at the
University of Pennsylvania.

I came today for treatment
completely crushed. Called my husband, he left work and drove me
here. Such a transformation. it is just unbelievable that one
person can make such a difference in somebody else's well being.
Yesterday I had a very unpleasant and troubling conversation...
and I allowed all the bad will to come into my heart and soul.
It crushed me. I wondered how it didn't kill me, I suppose it
could. I cried for hours and hours, my blood pressure went so
high that I couldn't respond to people. I don't have high blood
pressure, never did. It was the first time. Today morning I was
throwing up, my blood pressure was up and down, changed every
several minutes, tears rolling and chest pain. I was thinking
that I should go to the emergency room and not here. I am glad I
came here instead. All pain is gone, I fell such an emotional
uplifting - no more tears. Very peaceful.

Working with Master Ru has
been a revolutionary experience for me. He seems to work from
knowledge and training but also from intuition, from
observation. One feels comfortably in the hands of a tRue
observer of the human condition. I feel safe. I am warmly aware
of his tactfulness, acceptingness. One never feels accused. so
many therapists seem to accuse the victim as if the illness were
his or her own fault. Here, with Master Ru, there does not seem
to be much question of fault or blame. It does not matter how
one got sick, only that one try to access the good energy in
oneself to become as well as possible. He offers a sturdy bridge
to that possibility.
I also keenly appreciate
the sense of optimism, that improvement is possible; and the
knowledge that if one cannot be made over from scratch one can
at least get better. All things are possible.

I am a licensed
psychologist working with elderly people. My patients are
depressed and physically handicapped. Because of the stress in
my work I felt burned out, tired much of the time and needed to
cope with the negative feelings.
In addition, I had
irregularity in my monthly cycle, chronic back pain and numbness
in my arms on awakening. Before meeting Master Ru I had
treatments with various chiropractors which did not help me. I
also had estrogen therapy which I started but could not continue
because of the side effects of the medication.
After several sessions with
Master Ru almost all of my symptoms disappeared. I felt more
energized and renewed. I felt more comfort and contentment.
I also noticed changes in
performing my work. I was able to give much more to my patients
and could help them more with their coping with their physical
limitations. Somehow my patients noticed changes in me and I
often heard them say that just seeing me for a short period of
time made them feel better.

My patient has been
undergoing six months of chemotherapy for breast cancer. This
treatment incorporates medications with many possible side
effects and is often debilitating. She is doing well and
attributes much of her ability to tolerate therapy to the help
she is receiving from Master Ru Yuwen, a T'ai C'hi/Qi Gong
teacher who is providing her with appropriate exercises. Her
faith in the importance of her interaction with Master Ru Yuwen
is contributing to her ability to tolerate medical treatment.

My patient has been having
treatments for hot flashes, depression and anxiety related to
breast cancer treatment. She has found that in seeing Master
Yuwen Ru her hot flashes have been reduced from 8 to 10 times a
day to once every two days and that her anxiety and depression
have improved. In addition, her pain from shingles has been
relieved.

I am an expert in the
research of brain damage resulting from stroke and
cerebrovascular disease, on which I have published more than 100
research articles over a period of 25 years. From my knowledge
of the biochemistry of brain damage, I recognize that several of
the risk factors most important in stroke prevention are
directly reduced by the practice of Tai Chi. The first is
hypertension. Tai Chi exercise lowers blood pressure by inducing
a state of deep relaxation. It is known that the incidence and
severity of stroke is greatly increased by high blood pressure.
Thus, the practice of Tai Chi will decrease one of the major
risk factors of stroke as well as heart disease.
Second, my research, funded
by the National Institutes of Health, has recently focused on
the intrinsic mechanisms by which the brain defends itself
against brain damage caused by strokes. These protective
mechanisms are triggered by stimulation of the brain through
normal sensory pathways and through pathways as yet poorly
understood. My research has demonstrated that sensory
stimulation induces trophic chemicals that enable nerve cells to
survive a stroke. I believe that the practice of Tai Chi and the
treatment with acupressure stimulates these same protective
pathways. Thus, the methods that Master Ru employs have, in my
opinion, a direct beneficial effect on several chemical factors
that protect the brain against stroke.

I began consulting with Dr
Ru in October 1995, usually once or twice a week. I remember
telling him at the beginning when asked by him what was the
nature of my problems, that I was in good health but was seeking
consultation mainly to enhance my health and well being. My
visits were quite valuable and usually left me feeling relaxed
and in a high state of comfort.
Earlier last year in March
1996, I went for a regular checkup. I asked my doctor to order a
blood cholesterol test because I had had elevated cholesterol
and triglyceride levels for the last ten years, perhaps due to
the presence of genetic factors (my father had suffered from
angina in his later years). No amount of dietary control or
exercise had brought my cholesterol down below 200 mg./dl. I had
more or less given up, yet I did not want to take cholesterol
lowering drugs because their long term effects are not known.
Imagine my utter surprise (and delight) when my internist called
a few days later to say that my cholesterol level was normal and
what was I worrying about! I guess I had forgotten to tell Dr Ru
about this, but I got better anyway.
What do I make of this, one
may ask? Well, I am a scientific researcher myself, so I realize
this one anecdote does not provide incontrovertible evidence to
the effect that my cholesterol level came down because of
Qigong. This was not a double blind, controlled experiment,
obviously. But all I can say is that I made no progress with any
other approach to bring down my cholesterol level, and Qigong
seems to have had an impact. I had made no other changes to my
diet or lifestyle during this period that might have explained
this result.

I am a modern dancer and
choreographer who has continued to practice a physically
demanding art from well into middle age. I am 54. Constant
vigorous use of the body to discover new movement an to perform
is taxing an stressful. As I've aged I've sought many kinds of
help to mitigate the many troubles that accompany a dancer's
life. These remedies have included Chiropractic, Shiatsu
Massage, Acupuncture, Swedish Massage, Alexander technique,
Bioenergetics, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Relaxation
techniques, Nutritional Regimens, and visit to doctors who
practice western medicine for specific muscular and joint
related problems. In short I have a wide range of experience in
forms of physical therapy.
For the past five months I
have been taking weekly classes with Master Ru. During that time
I have experienced fundamental changes in my physical, mental
and emotional being. Not only have chronic conditions in my
lower back and legs all but disappeared, but my overall muscular
tone has improved, a youthful sense of bodily ease has returned,
and a more optimistic, assertive cast has come to dominate my
daily outlook and behavior.

Until my first treatment
with Master Ru, I had excruciating pain in my right hip and was
unable to walk. On January 17, in addition to hip pain I was
vomiting constantly and had to be taken in an ambulance to the
emergency room.
During the week I was there
I was given antibiotics and glucose intravenously to treat
severe urinary tract infection and the concomitant dehydration
that caused me to loose 15 pounds. The battery of tests I was
given were reassuring in that there was no life threatening of
permanently crippling disorder was discovered but I was still
unable to walk because of the pain. After I began to be able to
eat, they gave me a walker and I was dismissed.
When a friend told me of
Master Ru, my husband took me. After my first treatment with
Master Ru, I left walking without the walker and without pain!

In may of this year I was
diagnosed with breast cancer. Though word-of-mouth I contacted
Master Ru and began a series of qi gong treatments-- deep
massage and meditation. After only a few treatments, my energy
and a positive attitude emerged. My oncologist is pleased at how
well I am tolerating my chemotherapy treatments. The one time I
missed my weekly qi gong session, my white blood cell count
dropped so low I could not be given chemotherapy. Three days
after Master Ru administered qi gong, my counts were back to
normal and have stayed that way.

I have been seeing Master
Ru weekly for over three months. I began these visits after
seeing several doctors and getting little to no results. I then
decided to seek an alternate route to treat my condition. The
impetus for this decision came when one doctor decided that I
should begin taking hormones.
I was told several months
ago that there has been a tremendous increase in the production
of cortisol and an equally disturbing decrease in the production
of DHEA in my body. I have not only suffered from chronic
fatigue and anxiety, but my healing process has slowed - that is
tissue healing. The results of this increased level of stress to
my system have ranged from blood toxicity - which produced skin
discoloration's and rashes, to large ecchymoses after minor
injuries (these have been painstakingly slow to disappear and
some have remained for up to a year). I have suffered from
chronic insomnia, lethargy, and increased anxiety. These
symptoms have been accompanied by mood swings and occasional
depression. It had become increasingly difficult to function
under these conditions.
As a massage therapist and
instRuctor of Shiatsu and of Anatomy and Physiology, health is
an integral part of my practice and essential to support my way
of life. I had been unable to work regularly without strain,
injury and fatigue, and had been slow to recover from those
injuries sustained My earning capacity has greatly suffered.
Therefor, it has been
remarkable that after only a few visits with Master Ru, I began
to feel results. At first the improvements were subtle; I had
more energy, was consistently less emotional, and was sleeping
more soundly. After several weeks, the improvements were
undeniable. I was generally more energetic, the joint pain to
which I had become accustomed had lessened, and I was still
sleeping soundly. As a result I have been able to see more
clients and to begin an exercise program.
1996
I was introduced to Master
Ru in the late fall of 1995 by a relative who had been very
impressed with the treatments he was receiving. I had suffered
for fourteen months with severe chronic bronchial infections,
one of them culminating into pneumonia. After that each episode
of infection was being treated with antibiotics and cortisone.
All in all I had been on antibiotics more than nine times that
year. I felt that my immune system was worn down by the use of
this medication, and I was never quite free of the symptoms of a
bad cough and excessive sweats and fatigue. After intensive
testing, CAT scans and many series of tests, the general
prognosis was that I had a chronic condition which had to be
treated with either therapeutic doses of antibiotics or
antibiotics at the onset of an infection.
Since I have been
acquainted with various forms of Chinese healing techniques, I
was searching for a practitioner in the hopes that an
alternative method of healing might help my condition. I was
visiting my daughter in philadelphia for a limited period of
time, therefor Master Ru scheduled a series of ten sessions into
a two week period. After the first treatment I felt an
improvement in my well being, I felt very energized and lost the
fatigued feeling. I continued a series of chi kung exercises
provided by Master Ru in florida. I felt a continued improvement
in my general health, the coughing and sweats disappears in
about a month and I have been free of infections for over five
months. I was able to resume playing tennis and went skiing for
the first time in three years.
I also suffer from hypothyroidism and since treatments I have
been able to reduce my daily maintenance does of thyroid hormone
by 25%. I returned to philadelphia for another visit and took 5
energetic treatments from Master Ru, feeling visibly stronger
and more energetic.
I am very grateful for
Master Ru and I feel that his treatments applying Chi Kung
healing techniques, although unusual in the west but classic in
china, provide tremendous benefits in both healing and general
body/mind health maintenance. In my opinion he has performed a
great service in introducing these techniques here.

I can never thank you
enough for your magic treatment on my right ring finger in June
1994. The day before I left for China, I broke that finger
accidentally in the United States . The pain had tortured me
severely before I was referred to you in China. It seemed that
you did not do anything, only stood in front of me and ask me to
relax. Within minutes, I felt a strong power on my right ring
finger and my right hand. I began to beat the ground with my
right hand heavily hundreds and hundreds of times, and beat
faster an faster. At that moment the strong power filled in with
my right hand, it was so strong that I could hardly believe it
was my own hand. The treatment lasted more than one hour. After
that the pain on my finger was relieved, and I could move my
finger slowly. Then the next day, Master Ru gave me the same
treatment, the pain on the finger mysteriously disappeared and
my right ring finger could move the same as it was before. I
have never received such effective and unique treatment before
and I felt very impressed.
I wish that everything is
going well with you and this treatment will be always
appreciated.

Ru Yuwen has treated me
with Qigong since early May of this year. I came to him with
very low energy, depression and a painful heel spur. I have
noticed a strong increase in my energy and my heel pain has
diminished almost entirely. I attribute this to the highly
skilled care of Master Ru Yuwen I had previously tried
traditional western medicine over a long period of time for
these conditions, and was not helped. I see a clear lessening of
my symptoms each time Master Ru helps me with his qigong
techniques. I have not encountered anyone in NYC with comparable
skills.
He is very professional and
caring and brings with him a medical art which takes many years
of training and is 3000 years old. I have found him unique in
his ability to reduce pain quickly, to help me to safely
increase my health between visits.
Mr Ru's Miraculous
Treatment Brought Back a New Life to a Depressor
November 1995
When Stephen Joseph came to
see Master Ru this past summer, he said: My heart is so filled
with pain and I am very depressed that I cannot help crying
everyday..." With a gesture of cutting his own throat he
continued, "Sometimes I really want to commit suicide."
This Stephen in his fifties
lives in Manhattan, New York. He is a teacher of english at a
college; He has had a lot of publication quite successful in his
career. However, die to stress of life he had a very severe
depression, was loosing weight no energy and felling no interest
in life.
His friend suggested that
he see Master Ru and he agreed to give it a try because he had
gone through all kinds of medical treatments in hospitals and
nothing was helping him, so lost hope in the chance for his own
recovery. Unexpectedly, during the first session with Master Ru,
he felt very strong energy going into his body, opening his
heart filled it with joy and energy. He knew he found hope for
his withering life and decided immediately that he would come
aback again.
When his daughter came back
from her two months vacation in Hawaii, she was so shocked by
Stephen's change, "My Dad is a new Dad now." shouting with
excitement, could not believe what had happened. His friends
also noticed the big difference in him and called him "New
Stephen".
It is true that under
Qigong treatments not only his color came back and Stephen looks
great, but also he is now full of energy and happiness. He feels
young again as he told us. "Life is wonderful and enjoyable. I
love it."

Three years ago I was
diagnosed as having multiple myeloma. This is a bone cancer with
a prognosis of 22-44 months survival rate. One of the treatments
is to have a bone marrow transplant.
Although I went through 10
months of chemotherapy in preparation for the transplant, I
finally decided against it for there was not enough evidence of
long term survival.
Instead I opted for
alternative cancer treatments like Chinese herbal medicine,
vitamin therapy and acupuncture. It was through my Chinese
doctor that I became aware of Master Ru.
Every month I must visit my
oncologist to have my blood drawn. Through this they can check
to see if my myeloma cells have increased. For close to a year
my myeloma cells were running around 4300 to a high rate of
5180, the normal being 70-312.
When at first I visited
Master Ru, my last count was 4540. After three treatments by
Master Ru, my blood was drawn. Wehn the results came back from
the laboratory, it had gone down to 2070. My oncologist was
completely baffled by this.
When I was given
chemotherapy to reduce my myeloma cells it took at least 6
months to achieve this and it cost my insurance company $30,000
or more.
On October 24 I received
the lab report from my last blood test and it was down to 1760.

I have been trying to cure
my ulcerative colitis since 2/95. Before that, my left abdomen
had been hurt for 3 years. Some doctor said that I had gall
stones and my whole gall bladder was removed in 9/93. After that
surgery, it still hurt me and my period was abnormal so I was
sent to see a gynecologist who said i had an ovarian cyst. He
prescribed some contraceptive pills for 6 months. It helped calm
my symptoms for a short period, until 12/94 when I got very bad
diarrhea with fresh blood. I was sent to a G. I. doctor and had
all kinds of X-rays. It was proved that ulcerative colitis was
the main problem. I had to take 4-5 kinds of pills every day,
especially "Prednisone" which my doctor could not reduce the
dose because as soon as he did it would flare up again. It
caused all kinds of side effects.
I went to see Master Ru
on10/31/95. Since then, I do not have to take any medicine. I
have no more abdominal pain and my period is also as normal as
it used to be 3 years ago.
He is kind and caring. I'm
greatly appreciative that he builds up my energy and leads me to
a healthier and happier life in a month.
