VII. Course Description:

The intent of each practicum is to integrate theory and practice in a school setting. Each practicum intern will spend a minimum of 150 hours in a K-6 or 150 hours in a 7-12 setting as appropriate for this semester working under the direction of a full-time administrator / mentor.  As adult learners and potential school leaders, candidates are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. Accordingly, student learning in this course will be largely self-directed. A member of the Holy Family University School of Education will supervise the intern and will have periodic meetings during the field experience. At least one of these meetings will be on site to confer with the mentor and intern regarding the intern's experiences and progress.  In addition, weekly email communications will be held between the intern and the University supervisor as described below. Interns are expected to complete daily/weekly field-based assignments and an in-depth field-based leadership project to be determined jointly with the cooperating administrator and the college supervisor. In addition, each intern will prepare weekly, electronic journal entries which reflect on these field-based assignments. These reflections will be emailed as an attachment to the University supervisor on a weekly basis.  The University supervisor will respond to these reflections via email as appropriate. A copy of these reflections, as well as completed assignments, work, projects, etc. should be placed in the intern's professional portfolio as an indicator of progress in the completion of the Professional Development Plan. The work completed in this Practicum serves as partial proof of completing all Educational Leadership Program Goals and the Pennsylvania Department of Education Specific Program Standards for the Principalship.  The portfolio will be submitted and reviewed as part of the student's exit criteria in EDUC 589 Seminar in Educational Leadership.
